A Timeline of Demi

We've watched her since Disney Channel and now she's one of the most popular female artists in the world! Demi Lovato has grown so much and has overcome many obstacles thrown at her during her early years of fame. When comparing the overall message of her first album to that of her most recent one, it is clear how far she's come!

2008 seemed to be the year that jump started Demi's career. She released her first album "Don't Forget", which was an instant hit, reaching the number two spot in the Billboard 200 and sold over 530,000 copies. The lead tracks from that album, "Get Back" and "Don't Forget", keep the theme of being heartbroken over a relationship and not wanting to move on from it. The year 2009 saw another album, "Here We Go Again", that was once again centered around a boy that she just couldn't let go. It debuted as number one in the Billboard 200 and sold 180,000 copies within its first week of being released.

Everything seemed to be moving in a positive direction. Demi had two hit albums out and was starring in a new Disney Channel comedy series, "Sonny With A Chance". However, 2010 revealed the truth about how Demi's life was really going. She checked herself into rehab towards the end of the 2010 after years of battling Bulimia, addiction, and self-harm. Sonny With A Chance was cancelled, and her fans held their breath as they waited for the damage to be announced. Fortunately, Demi was released a short time later and released another album in 2011 entitled "Unbroken". Her fans could tell that this album was very different from the others. Although it did resemble her past tracks by talking about wanting to get boys attention, she also spoke of more personal subjects such as her alcoholic father in "For The Love of a Daughter". This song and a few others like it gave us a look at just how damaged Demi felt. This album was only the first step in her recovery process.

Her fourth album, "Demi", is seen as a major breakthrough toward her becoming more confident in her own skin. While explaining all the pain and sadness that she felt growing up, this album also promoted self love and empowerment. "Warrior" was the most emotional track for me. It was so vulnerable, and Demi didn't hold back in expressing how her life was then and how she's changing now. This album proved just how dedicated she was to reinventing herself and to not letting her heartbreaking past influence her future.

And finally we have her most recent masterpiece, "Confident". This album shows how much she has matured not only as an artist but as a person. She speaks of knowing your worth and never letting anyone define who you are. Even though all of the tracks on this album are amazing, the one that makes me the most proud of her is "Father". She went from feeling small and helpless in "For The Love of a Daughter" to realizing that the abuse from her dad wasn't her fault and even forgiving him in "Father". The pain he had caused her was a huge obstacle in her life and she overcame it. She is so strong and I am beyond proud of who she is today. Demi is not only an amazing artist, she is an inspiration to anyone who is dealing with depression or lack of confidence. Her albums are a representational sequence of who she was and who she is, and I can't wait to see what she does next!

And if you can't see how far she's come, you need to try again!!
